Answer the following questions based on the reading, NY Times Article: DNA Tells Students They Aren't Who They Thought in 4-6 sentences and then respond to 2 of your peers for a total of 6 posts.
- Pick out one quote that was significant to you. Explain it and why it was significant.
- What biases did you have, for or against the subject, while reading this text? When did you become aware of it and did it hinder your evaluating the text in an objective way?
- What ideas were you unfamiliar with from the text and how did you approach that information?
- Pose one question you have about the text. (This may not meet the length requirement.)
- Attempt to answer someone else's question.
- Respond to another student's ideas-- agree, disagree, or add to what they have written in some way. Do not merely restate or parrot their statement. As always, be respectful and academic.
1. One quote that I read was " Other people have told me I‘m not really black, or I think I‘m better than other black people because I‘m lighter.” People just go by physical looks. You would think that racism is already in our past, but unfortunately it is not. People would tell Ms. Best that she isn’t black just because her skin color is light. To peoples’ images being black is actually having a really dark skin color, when its not necessarily true. This basically shows how people think but by just physical attraction, they don't bother asking your background to see where you're really from.
ReplyDeleteInteresting observations, Jenny. The idea that people are as ethnic as their physical characteristics are prominent is one that people struggle with-- both in showing their background and in attempts to hide it.
DeleteI strongly agree with you on this one, it's so true. People just judge others based on their looks and most of the time don't even bother asking about a person's background. There's no point in judging on someone's look, like what does it really tell you about that person? you know nothing about that person, the only thing you know is that he/she is either black or white.
DeleteI thought you had a good point of view. Usually people never stop to think but they react on certain things. As humans we just like to judge others and to look at them in a certain way but a way that we want them to be looked at. Some people really don't bother to care about another person's feelings. I think people should stop noticing based on what's outside and start to looking what's inside.
DeleteI agree with you, People shouldn't think that way but unfortunately theres still people in this world that are racist even though most people believe that its gone, its really not.
Delete2. To me reading this text, it made me understand how important pride is to people. Little by little, with our new generation, I believe we are conquering over this black-white issue, but with our family members, they still live in “ the past”. What I liked was how the students decided to do the DNA test to see where they really do come from. They wanted to know where else is their descendants from. What made me so interested in the text was when all the students did the DNA test, almost all of them were at least “1 percent of something else”. I actually started to think that I wanted to do that myself. I would love to know if I am from another nationality other than Salvadorian.
ReplyDelete3. One thing I was kind of unfamiliar with when I was reading was "Modern migration patterns are also leaving a mark." I really didn't understand what I meant. I re-read it and continued and it gave me the idea after of it meaning with people coming from one place and leaving to another. But as they keep moving, they build family, and that's how the mixed race has grown.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Jenny. As different populations immigrated to America, they gain exposure to those of different ethnic backgrounds. This gives them an opportunity to produce offspring which they may not have if they had remained in their countries of origin where most may be of the same ethnicity.
DeleteYa, you got it. Now you can see it might be a little hard to migrate do to legal paper work and all that but back then it was different. The U.S actually invited other countries here to exploit the and get cheap labor. And what happen was one thing led to another and races mixed you may think your 100% something and end up at 20%.
Delete4. Ms. Best had said that "Black people have told me I shouldn't date white people." What did she really mean by that? Is it because she is actually black? Or because she's light skinned?
ReplyDeleteI guess they said that she shouldn't date white people because they probably want her to start getting used to dating guys within her race, even though she has a boyfriend whose white.
DeleteI agree with Hamdi Jaber, that they want her to get use to dating guys within her race.
DeleteIt could be either or. she could be black and people dont want to see her mix. on the other hand she could be light skinned and people dont want here kids to be lighter because it'll be one less dark skinned person.
DeleteAnswer to question:In my opinion I think Ms. Best was a light skinned black person whose friends were black and didn't want her to be involved with white people just because she looked like them.

DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThat's a good guess. How can you find out for sure if there is a link between drug trials and race?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI guess they mean how different types of race grew up a different way in their household just like everyone else.
DeleteThere is no way a person can a can act black or white, however in society people have all these stereotypes on how think black and white act..
DeleteThe difference between acting white or black is all just stereotype! Nobody can act a color and it really all depends on how a child was brought up.
DeleteI think it's all just a stereotype. There's no such thing as acting white and black. Not every black person has the same attitude and actions just like every white person don't act the same. It's all how they was raised and who they grew up with and who and where they were most surrounded by and with.
Delete5. When we are born no one comes with a manual there is no way of acting in any particular way because of our race, we have our different cultures but it comes maybe to food or religion but no to act in a specific way just because we look white, black or yellow or some other color.

Delete1. One quote in this passage that I found significant was "I figured it would be interesting. I'm light-skinned and I wanted to know my whole make-up."(page 1) Many people believe that they aren't who they really are. People can be colored but if one was to think outside the box we would notice that generations ago their father's grandfather could have been from another ethnicity! Humans have been around for years now and everyone would like to know where there ancestors were from.
ReplyDeleteSteph I think it doesn't matter if the person is your grandfather or your great-grandfather you can still have their characteristics even though it had past 2 or 3 generations. In fact there are families who inherit illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension and you can get it though your mother and passed on to your son in the future.Favio Miranda#6
Delete1. One quote that was significant to me was when Ms. Best said "Black people have told me i shouldn't date white people".(page 2) I find this quote significant, because people shouldn't date or judge others based on their ethnicity. I think it is wrong that people told Ms. Best that she shouldn't date white people, because being white or black shouldn't matter. The people who told Ms.Best to not date white people shouldn't care so much about who Ms. Best dates, and to actually say something could probably effect Ms. Best is relationship because in this article it does mention that her boyfriend is white.
ReplyDelete6. This quote that Hamdi pointed out is actually a pretty good one. People should definitely not judge according to skin color. Dating another individual has to do with attraction and further than that comes true love. Very well explained describing in which this article doesn't mention anything about her boyfriend being white.
Deletei strongly argree with you nothing should matter when a person has feeling for someone. not skin color. not how the person looks. only attraction and love counts
Delete2. In this article, it showed me that people are still so concerned about whose black, whose white, and whose better then the other. These things shouldn't even be brought up these days. Being black or white does not describe who you are. In this article these students seemed like their ethnicity is all that mattered to them. I would think that these students would be more focused on school work then what their background is.
ReplyDeleteReally ask yourself if you answered the question. If this was your position at the onset of reading the text, than incorporate it into an answer that responds specifically to whether you had feelings about the subject before and how it impacted the way you perceived the information in the text you read.
Delete1. One quote that caught my attention was when Natasha Best said "Why are we, as a people, so caught up in race? Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had". This quote brings out the sad truth about racsim. It still exist, and is childish being caught up with a race when there are millions of lives dying from not having any food or clean water to drink. We need to progressed, and we need to start thinking as one.
ReplyDelete2. There are many reasons why i'm against the subject of the artical. First of all, after reading this artical it clearly show how americans are still thinking of the world as indivuals. This kind of thinking is what destroys millions of hard working families. Being black, white, tan, or yellow doesn't matter to me. Learing how to put our differences aside and learning how to have peace, to me is a more important subject than researching our DNA.
3. The one quote that caught my eye which i wasn't sure about was "Modern migration patterns are also leaving a mark". After re-reading this a couple times I'm assuming it means that people from different countries that come to America build families that create bigger families and thats how we have a huge mix of different ethnicities.
ReplyDeleteGreat! I liked your strategy of re-reading the text. Very effective. Anything in particular go into the thought process that led to this conclusion?
Delete4. One question i have about this article is when Mr. Harrison said " I am 48 percent white-genetically I am, at least, but not culturally, and the fact that I'm black is more important, because it's something I know. Its who I'm comfortable with". My question is why is Mr. Harrison so proud and happy to be black but doesn't seem so happy to be white? What is it about being black that makes him feel this way?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteTo me, it's because he was raised being "black", just like Yacine responded. Sometimes different cultures have such pride being where they are from. As for Mr. Harrison he was in this type of community, that's why when they used to tell him "white boy", he used to feel kind of uncomfortable.
DeleteI found this quote very significant children would tease him and call him "white boy". I think nobody should be called names no matter what because nobody is better then anyone for that. We should all have respect over each other, skin color is not a prefrence, all should be treated equal.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you. I believe that nobody's perfect in this world. I believe that we don't have any reasons to name someone based on looks. It's not fair for someone to be put down emotionally. It's not even fair for that one person.
DeleteI also agree. Unfortunately, till this day people are like this, and funny thing is even little 4-year old kids do this! To me, every person thinks a different way. Lucky for us we think that racism isn’t right. But other people don’t think that. Just how there is racism with blacks, there is also with Hispanics, Chinese, and other cultures. I’m hoping that throughout time this will all vanish, because it sucks living in a society like this.
DeleteWhile I do agree I wanted to also add that I child will not say nor do anything that they are being taught at home. Parents need to pay close attention to the people they bring around there kids and use of language.
Delete6. I’m totally agreed with you but also remember we can make the difference if we start with our family, with our children in how you will educate them.
Delete6. I am so agreeing with Mr. Williams. No child is born a bigot. The actions and attitudes which a child sees and lives each day have got to have some type of affect on them. Racism is somewhat like a vicious cycle, that if it’s not broken, it can become very dangerous!
Delete2. Reading this text made me realize more that skin color is just a color, we are all the same. We all have the same rights. Also the DNA testing was a great idea because even students who think they are 100% one race or another, and almost every one of them wants to discover something that they're at least 1% of something else.
ReplyDelete3. I was unfamiliar at first with the part that says "I was surprised at how much European i was, my father's family knows there is a great-great-great grandfather who was Scottish, who nobody remebered him, but i after i re-read it i understood with such little percent of an old family memeber we still have the race in our bloods.
ReplyDelete4. Hmmm so is DNA actually very effective?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
Delete1. I found this qoute to be significant when Mr.Harrision mentioned, "Just because I found out I'm white, I'm not going to act white". I thought of him expressing his point of view when he found out there was partially white in him. I felt like he wasn't going to act different or be different around people just because his DNA had a percentage of white culture in him. I thought of how most people aren't proud of where they came from. Sometimes we as humans feel like ashame or pre-occupied worrying about what others think of us and make decisions like changing our personality or our train of thoughts. I felt like Mr.Harrision was an example to me by just accepting who you are and not letting a percentage DNA change you.
ReplyDelete2. In my opinion, when I was reading this text it was interesting how there are people in this world that are comfortable and appreciate where they come from. We sometimes feel like we have the urge to question people by their looks and criticize their thoughts. This article was way to stand up and to show that we as humans are equal. The fact how there can be people that can have a percentage of black, white, hispanic, and etc.Yet, They manage to criticize without even knowing. The article was a way to change someone's point of views about racism.
ReplyDelete3. A text that I was unfamiliar with was "Many unexpected results can be explained by family history". At first, I thought of how someone by having an illness for example, stomach cancer and doesn't know the reasons why it occured. The DNA can be a result of leading to a specific answer in family history. Since their can be a sightly chance that one of your family member suffered through the same illness.
ReplyDelete4. The one question I have about the text was when Samuel M. Richards claimed," People want to identify with this pop multiracial culture. They don't want to live next to it, but they want to be part of it.". what made me question is why do they want to be part of it? How do they feel? In what ways motivates them to be in it?
ReplyDeleteI believe that being multiracial is pretty popular now and I guess its pretty interesting to found out different ethnicity lifestyles and to be a part of it.
DeleteGreat question, Najivi.
Delete1. Ms. Best has noted discrimination on both sides. “Black people have told me I shouldn’t date a white people”
ReplyDeleteI think she is right, black people don’t want to date white and white people don’t want to date black, one of my friend is dark skin and her husband is white, she said everywhere they go people look up them weird. My other friend she is African American, she doesn’t want to date white guys, because her mom is going to get upset. What is wrong with this world in the end we are all humans, white or black, American or Hispanic we are the same.
Frany
1. One quote that was significant was the one that Ms. Best said "Black people have told me I shouldn't date white people." That quote shows you that there's still racism until this day. People should date any type of ethnicity that they choose and want.
ReplyDelete6. I totally agree with you, that quote was significant for me too, I think we should take advantage of this multicultural country and learn a little bit about other culture, we need to stop judging people by their look and respect everybody.
Delete2. I believe this article was very interesting. Theres some people in this world that are still racist, but overall most people are proud of where they're from and are really concern to see if they have different type of ethnicity in them because its fascinating to see if you have a different nationality in you. Its was very interesting.
ReplyDeletePerhaps, but some things are relative to class, region and circumstances. Take a look at the question again-- did you answer it as it was asked?
Delete3. One thing I was unfamiliar with is a line in the article, it says ''Mr. Harrison, for instance, recalled a great-grandfather who "would cross for white, he was so fair." That one quote really confused me, I didn't really understand what the great grandfather meant by that quote, it was very confusing.
ReplyDelete4. My question is if people still believe in racism still? Or do you believe that we progressed from it already?
ReplyDeleteI think that we have a little bit progress, but we still have a lot to do about it.
DeleteI think we have made some progress, but there still needs to be a lot done about it.
Delete5. To respond to your question, drodriguez, I do believe that we have progressed somewhat. It’s so sad to say, but racism, no matter how hard we want it to go away, will always exist. For example: you’re not good enough because you’re too light-skinned, or you’re too dark-skinned. Also, you are this or that, we can go on, but the reality is a tough thing to accept, although I’m not willing to accept ignorance. And that unfortunately, is the world in which we live in.
Delete1) The quote I choose was... "Why are we, as people, so caught up in race? Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had. Racism exits in today's society because of how families try to instill there own personal beliefs in there children whether it being positive or negative. When you have parents and grandparents who were brought up and these historic times and form all these ideals of how people of a different race treated them and are limited to certain aspects. While a child isn't aware of any of these issues they trust their parents are knowledgeable enough to guide them in the right direction.
ReplyDelete2) Overall we as people can't correct any issues nor progress when we're holding to personal beliefs. Let's come with a solution to address the issue so we can focus on more important thing like education, foreign polices , jobs creation ect. Racism has been an occurring issue for years I just hope we can one day get past it.
ReplyDeleteIt's certainly something that many are impatient about. Why are we still dealing with this issue when it should be in the distant past? Take a look at the question though, and ask yourself if you responded to it accurately.
Delete3) One ideal that i was unfamiliar with was that great great grandparents would contribute on average 6.25 percent of a person's genes.
ReplyDeleteSo, how did you approach that information?
Delete4) What were the parents reaction when they found out the results of the DNA test?
ReplyDeleteGood question; a follow up text would be interesting. Any predictions?
Deletefor the most part i think parents were some what upset with there children as they value there family history..
Delete2. I can’t believe that in 2012 people are still racist; I think everything comes from generation and is up to us to make progress about this. If our grandparents still think this way, we need to make the difference and teach our children that God created everybody the same, it doesn’t matter what you look like we are the same. We need to teach our kids to accept everybody the way they are.
ReplyDeleteReally think about whether you answered the question posed. If not, please re-attempt it.
Delete3. The part of the text I was unfamiliar with is, for instance, recalled a great-grandfather who “would cross for white, he was so fair”, it was hard to understand what the writer meant , but by reading the next paragraph I understood a little bit more, I think what he meant was that back then being light skin Afro- American was popular and women were attracted to him and the word “fair” in that sentence means light skin.
ReplyDelete4. Dr. Richard said “my secondary goal is to improve race relations”.
ReplyDeleteMy question is: How can we improve race relations?
3. The quote that confused me was " I was surprised at how much European I was, because my father's family knows..."(pg 2) He is speaking about his great-great grandfather who was Scottish. In addition, they contribute on average 6.25% which is a whole lot for a great-great grandfather! After it explained that ancestors might be represented at a higher or lower level in today's generation I realized that the number may vary.
ReplyDeleteSo how did you approach that information? And did it make sense to you after you tried to figure it out or was it still unclear?
Delete4. What is it exactly with today's generation that still discriminates to a certain extent? How accurate is this DNA test?
ReplyDelete1. One qoute that was significant to me was "why do people, especially in this country, want to know? Why are we, as people so caught up in race? Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had." (Page 2) I believe the reason why this country is so caught up in race is probably because this country has has the most people from around all over the world. In other country's you barely see people from other countries coming from across the world like the United Stated does, and if you do it'll be very rare.I think we have progressed but it's just that's as much as we can get and we have gotten very far. If there was no racism, this nation would be perfect but when is life ever perfect? It's just things in life everyone has to deal with in some point of their life's and just learn to deal with it and not pay mind to it.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting ideas. I think you are on to something in answering question posed in the text. I'd challenge you to not to fall back on cliche statements, as in the last sentence or two of your reply. To keep your argument and ideas strong, offer an analysis, pose thoughts for further consideration or give an example of your own!
Delete2. In this article it just made me realize how there's always going to be people who consider themselves as individuals. It doesn't shock me how there's still racism now because the first thing people do is judge by your appearance. No matter how much we have tried to stop racism it's never going to happen because there's way to many people who have different thought's about white and black getting along. It all depends how people are raised and who they grew up with and what type of people they were surrounded by the most.
ReplyDelete3. One part of the text I was unfamiliar with f the was " any one ancestor might be respresented at a higher or lower level in today's generation."
ReplyDelete4. One question I have about the text is how Mr. Harrison even though after he took the DNA test, he wasn't able to accept who he was. He said " I'm a proud black man" but he can't forget somehow he's 48 percent European. I just think even though he consider himself's black he should be also proud he's white some how.
ReplyDelete3. The text that I was unfamiliar with was when Mr. Harrison said "Just because I found out I'm white, I'm not going to act white," he said." I'm very proud of my black side. I wasn't sure how this quote was related to his identity.
ReplyDeleteWhat identity means to me is self respect. The way that approach this information is by rereading the quote and making sure I understood his point of view. I disagree with Mr. Harrison way of thinking his being a stereotype and he shouldn't lose his self respect just because his part white.
4. Is this articular about stereotype against a race?
“When I teach I try to demonstrate to students how complex race and ethnicity are”. Read this made me think of a comment I made in class pertaining to how none of us really know exactly where we’re from. My family that settled in Puerto Rico could have migrated from West Indian or South Africa. No man can go back in time and follow their family tree until now the only thing we can do is go by the stories handed down by family. At the end its like playing telephone the story is going to change from person to person.
ReplyDeleteGreat! How does your family history relate to the quote you selected? Make the connection for your reader.
DeleteFrom the beginning of the text I knew the author had a valid purpose for writing this. As he told us about how he was called white boy for being light skin. Any time a text is being written with emotion or personal ties behind it you have that feeling it’s going to be good. Reading it for me was very enlightening because I’ve always felt we never know we’re we are really from and I got the hints in the beginning that the author must have also been curious so being able to make the connection pretty much sucked me in.
ReplyDeleteEver since I was little I’ve had friends of all types of ethnicities and skin color so that was never a problem with me. So when I read that the student wanted to be part black to make their parents made it was like a new thought for me. No I don’t live under a rock I knew racism still exist but it’s one of those things that it’s out of sight out of mind. I don’t associate myself with people who think less of another race or ethnicity. In my mind I don’t have time for hate because if you close your mind you close your mind to knowledge. My dream has always been to be a chef now how am I supposed to master my craft being ignorant and close minded to other cultures?
ReplyDeleteI really had no questions about the text t be honest
ReplyDeleteSurely there must have been something about the text that you were unfamiliar with. At any rate, you are obligated to complete the assignment, so you need to come up with something...
Delete1.”Black people have told me I shouldn’t date white people” and “Other people have told me I’m not really black , or I think I’m better than other black people because I’m lighter” these two are very significant because they talk about happiness like if we talk about colors that will match or not, nowadays many people put first culture, race, skin color than what would be the most important thing “Our hearts” inside we are all the same.
ReplyDeleteGood start, but your post doesn't meet the minimum specified. Aside from explaining the quote, you can add additional analysis or insight from your own experience.
DeleteUnfortunately up to these days we still carry with our past, also notice that depends in many ways how we were raised who we interacted with, or how we act now, my experience as a Spanish is that sometimes I feel bad because I have accent when I speak, my vocabulary is very short and I want to make the difference, break the circle of my background as Ms. Best did she doesn’t forget where she came from, but her present is different she is dating a white man and have white friends she had broken the circle but not forgotten her ancestry history
Delete2. It is always a excellent choice to be aware of what is going on in Our world where we live since this country is full of people from all over the earth, I really like to know how people think or feel about the others from the very beginning of this text I was aware about how can people could be so defensive when it comes to skin color.
ReplyDelete3. People really want to know where they come from. Deep inside us we all would like to know what kind of blood runs inside us.
ReplyDeleteNora, how did you approach that information? There is another part to the question.
DeleteBecause of my own experience my family is not big at all, I never got the opportunity to know my grandparents from both sides mother and father, also because my childhood was very simple without family or holiday reunions, the few relatives I had were here in the USA, my mother told me once about her father that came from another country then I am mixed with some other culture.
DeleteAbout the question I was unfamiliar with many things because my acknowledge about DNA tests were only that you could know about your father or mother relationship, never knew you can also find about percentages of cultures in our blood, it was very shocking and interesting to find out how far the science is getting and how lucky were are to be here now.
4. Does it really matter the color of the skin or the culture when it comes to happiness?
ReplyDelete• Maybe we haven’t progressed as much as we thought we had.
ReplyDeleteThis quote is significant to me due to the fact that even though slavery and discrimination times toward people of dark skin color is supposed to be a theme from the past, there are tons of people now a days who still have the concept of black people been less important and valuable then white people. Therefor they treat people different and this discrimination hasn’t change completely. In my opinion we are all the same since the one and we should all treat and respect people equally no matter what race or color we are. Favio Miranda.#1
I agreed with Mr. Harrison's idea about making that DNA test so he can know the true facts about how much a person is mixed together with other races. This test actually helped him a lot because it showed him how much percent of an other race he had. Since this test is 90% accurate he knew it wasn't a waste of time. Favio Miranda#2
ReplyDeleteI also agree with this statement. Not only will this test help people realize exactly what percentage of each race they have, this can also certainly help stop discimination and get people to stop caring about what race or ethnicity other people have and this will also help people understand that they should accept each other for who they are.
DeleteI was very unfamiliar with a few ideas in this text specially one; the white students wanting to be tested to know if they were also part black because it would upset their parents. Maybe their parents are also a mix themselves so the kids also want to be a mix of races.Favio Miranda#3
ReplyDeleteDo you think Mr. Harrison have had taken the DNA test if he was white instead of light skinned black? Favio Miranda#4
ReplyDeleteGood question!
Deletethats a good one. i think he would of tacken it becouse both of his mother and father are black so i think he would of been stuck with that question "why did i cam out white if my mother and father are black"
Delete"When I teach I try to demonstrate to students how complex race and ethnicity are" Dr. Richards said. This quote is significant to me because to me this shows that there are people out there who still care about knowing others's races and ethnicities before really getting to know each other, which in my opinion is very wrong because it is not right to judge others based on their race or ethnicity because there are all different kinds of people all over the World, in every country.
ReplyDeleteTake another look at the statement you are responding to. What is Dr. Richards saying and how does it fit into your opinion?
DeleteThis statement shows that when Dr. Richards teaches he tries to show or get the students to understand how complicated race and ethicities are. In my opinion, this is true because race and ethnicities can sometimes be very dificult to understand.
DeleteGreat! Now how will his experiment show that they are complicated and how will it help people understand?
DeleteHis experiment will show that they are complicated by showing people have a certain percentage of some races that they never thought they had. This will help people understand that no one should be judging anyone based on thier race because the fact that one person belongs to a certain race does not mean that he or she has a certain personality or culture becauase of belonging to that certain race or ethnicity. Therefore, they will stop caring about what race or ethnicity others have and they will learn how to accept each other for who they are.
DeleteExcellent. Your response illustrates you can analyze and evaluate text with a well thought out response. Be sure all your responses are fully explained and thoughtful.
DeleteI agreed to Mr. Harrison's idea of makeing the DNA test because this is when he found out exactly what percentage of eah race he has. This test is really good for anyone who would like to know exactly what percent of each race they have. #2
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't answer the question asked. Re-read the questions, re-think your ideas and post again.
ReplyDeleteI agreed to Mr. Harrison's idea of makeing the DNA test because this is how he found out exactly what percentage of each race he has. I was unaware of this until I read this articile. In my opinon, this is really good for anyone who would like to know exactly what percentage of each race they have. This will help stop discrimination and more people will start accepting each other for who they are and stop caring about other people's race or ethnicity.
DeleteI was un familiar with the fact that there was a DNA test to show you exactly what percentage of each race you have. This is a great idea because when people realize how much of each race they have exactly , this could certianly help stop discrimination
ReplyDeleteGood point! I'd like to know more about this. Also, there is a minimum requirement of 4-6 sentences to ensure that you fully explain your ideas. You're welcome to add to your ideas and repost.
DeleteI was un familiar with the fact that there was a DNA test to show you exactly what percentage of each race you have. This is a great idea because when people realize how much of each race they have exactly , this could certianly help stop discrimination. When people realize that they also share have some races that they did not know they had, than they will stop descriminating others and learn how to accept everyone for who they are.

ReplyDeleteDo you thin that they would be many people surprised by this DNA test, once they take it ?
ReplyDelete1.)In this article Don R.Harrison Jr quotes "im light-skinned and i wanted to know my whole makeup ".He thought it would be interesting to figure more about where he came from . The state college of P.A gave him a DNA test as part of one of his classes to determined his genetic ancestery . When he recived the results he was shocked to know he was 52 percent african and 48 percent European . he comes from two back parents and now knows he is half white .
ReplyDelete2.)My biases for the article was even though people generally have an idea of their nationality whether it be African American, Puerto Rican, Caucasian, etc. it would be intresting to know your full backgroup and where your relatives came from. It wouldnt hurt for any one to get a better acknowledgment of where they came from. The DNA test would just be something new and informative for the people who take it. There wouldnt be any harm done by taking the test; so why not take it? Like the article says,"It would be cool!"
3/4.)What i am unfamiliar with is that the article doesnt inform how the DNA test is taking, how are the results discovered and how long it takes for the reselts of the DNA test to come in. Im sure any one who would take this test would want to know things like this for their own benefits and to make sure the DNA test is real.
5.)How accurate is this DNA test? The DNA test is more then 90% accurate.
6.)Question: "Ms. Best had said that "Black people have told me I shouldn't date white people." What did she really mean by that? Is it because she is actually black? Or because she's light skinned?"
Answer: I believe Ms. Best meant that people are aware that she is African American but because she looks white she should actually date white people.
1. The quote that stood out to me was, “I am 48 percent white – genetically I am, at least, but not culturally. And the fact that I’m black is more important, because it’s something I know. It’s who I’m comfortable with,” Mr. Harrison said. I feel that in Mr. Harrison’s statement he was set on what he thinks is comfortable for him. I sensed that he was not willing to be open and accept other cultures. Mr. Harrison to me is very shallow, and maybe prejudice. It bothers me to think that people are ashamed of where they come from, and not just a part, but every part.
ReplyDelete2. It’s unfortunate to know that people feel the way that they do regarding race. This subject matter is really irritating to me personally. I don’t understand why people can’t get a grip and realize that by having these strong biases against the differences in color, features, or way of acting, they are cheating themselves of growth as a person. I don’t feel that this text hindered me in any fashion. But, I can understand how people may feel inside because of what my friends and family have shared with me, regarding their views, life experiences, and things of that nature.
ReplyDelete3. I was unfamiliar with the fact that there are DNA tests that can give you a percentage of each race that you are a part of. I would love to have that opportunity to have the test administered, just because of my curiosity I guess. I approached the test in a positive way. With all the technology that we have, it’s interesting to have the ability to see who we are as a whole, as far race is concerned.
ReplyDelete4. Why can’t people embrace everything that makes them who they are?
ReplyDelete1) Quote. When don r. Harrison jr. was growing up in Philadelphia neighborhood children would tease him and call him white boy. I think that this mean that no matter what. people in this world will still feel some type of way of other people color skin. Even if they don’t show it. racism will still be around.
ReplyDelete2) To me when I was reading this text, it mead me realized about how people are so in to the black and white thing. And how racism is still big in the u.s and how some people won’t accept who and what they are.
3) “Everyone wants to tack the test, even students who think they are a 100% one race or another.” The way I approach this information was, why would they just give up there DNA just like that without no question I know I would ask a thousand question if I’m going to give my DNA up just like that
4) Why do you think Don Harrison wants to DNA the students?
Stephen heats school he thinks it is a waste of money. The reason why is because he believes that we are here for a short amount of time.
